Pureosity founder and Kyoto University professor Easan Sivaniah recently visited Keiko Sumii, the current head of Japan's oldest recorded uchiwa maker.
The workshop has more than 400 years of documented history, with an oral lineage said to reach back over 1,000 years. The visit offered a close look at the craftsmanship, design language, and cultural depth behind traditional Japanese hand-held fans.
Sivaniah described the craftsmanship and designs as truly beautiful, and expressed hope for future collaboration around materials, design, and cultural heritage.
